samenvatting: We present a revelatory case study that investigated the effects of an open gender transition within a U.S. military organization. The research subject, a retired military officer and civil servant, made an open gender transition while remaining in the same job with the same chain of command and within the same organization. Relying on extensive interview data, we analyze the effect of how an open gender transition impacted an active-duty military unit during a 2-year period (2010-2014) prior to the Department of Defense's 2015 decision to pursue open inclusion of transgender men and women in the U.S. armed forces. samenvatting: On August 22, 2013, Bradley Manning released a statement requesting to be referred to as female. In the following days, the news media discussed whether language should shift toward a female representation. Using quantitative content analysis and qualitative contextual analysis, this study analyzed whether U.S. and international newspapers (N = 197) acknowledged Manning?s request to be referred to as 'Chelsea' in the two weeks after the statement. Results suggest that the mainstream press was hesitant in shifting toward a female representation. A comparison of international and U.S. newspapers suggests that the U.S. press lagged behind international coverage using a female depiction. samenvatting: On 20 September 2011, the repeal of 'Don?t Ask, Don?t Tell' (DADT) went into effect in the U.S. military. The repeal marked the end of discriminatory practices in the military based on sexual orientation, but it did not end the prohibition on transgender military service. The National Transgender Discrimination Survey (NTDS) found that transgender Americans serve in the military at a high rate; 20 percent of NTDS respondents had served in the armed forces as compared to 10 percent of the U.S. general population. This study draws upon both quantitative and qualitative data about transgender soldiers and veterans who responded to the NTDS to describe who these transgender soldiers and veterans are and what their experiences have been in regard to their military service. This study outlines respondents? reported issues in obtaining corrected identity documents, accessing military health care, and experiences of discrimination. This study finds that transgender veterans experience substantial barriers in these areas and also experience high rates of family rejection and homelessness.

samenvatting: This article explores news coverage from 2010-2013 of Chelsea (formerly known as Bradley) Manning?s disclosures of both state and gender secrets to discover how government actors, journalists, and social movement leaders disciplined emergent truths in two modalities. The first modality is juridical, involving Manning?s trial and reporting that focuses attention exclusively on Manning?s crime against the state; the second is biopolitical, disciplining Manning by discrediting her body and voice as troubled, confused, damaged, weak, irrational, and pathological. That Manning?s disclosures resulted in repressive and discursive discipline does not mean that such an outcome was inevitable. Rather than abandoning disclosure as a democratic project, we might ask ourselves how the rhetorical process of disclosure might open up a contradictory publicity that critically exposes the complexity of discipline itself. This symposium was co-sponsored by AGLP: The Association of LGBTQ Psychiatrists, and took place at the American Psychiatric Association's 2017 Annual Meeting in San Diego, California. It featured speakers Amir Ahuja, a psychiatrist and Director of Psychiatry at the Los Angeles LGBT Center; Shane Ortega, a retired sergeant in United States Army and a prominent advocate for change within the military; Aaron Belkin, a professor at the Palm Center, a research institute on LGBT military policy; and Paula Neira, a lawyer, nurse, and former naval officer who also shares her experience in the military and as an advocate.
